Tiger Team Privacy and Security Recommendations Still Fall Short

The ONC Health IT Policy Committee’s Tiger Team has been busy developing privacy and security recommendations for electronic HIE over recent months.  They’ve outlined seven recommendations which touch on everything from consent to authentication. While concerns abound regarding security and privacy, they may have overlooked a couple of key points in addressing the need.

Faced with mandates to improve administrative processes, reduce fraud, waste and abuse, and improve coordination of care for their members, Medicaid Plans have become key drivers of statewide health information exchanges.  HIEs are fueled by patient and provider data.  As a matter of fact, influential government and private groups such as the ONC HIT Policy Committee and HIMSS are leading the charge for accurate provider data to populate the provider directories that are needed to address many of the needs of Medicaid plans.
